I am probably not much different than you !
I was raised in a Christian home in a small (400 people) western Canadian town of 2 hard working post war landed immigrants.
The closest major centre to us was 60 miles away and had only 1 radio station which was the lifeblood of our town. We also received 1 over-the-air TV station so the radio in our kitchen, (the centre of our house as my mother was a homemaker), was on from 6 am to 11 pm. That's when my father shut it off as he turned in.
That radio gave me a sense of wonder, security and knowledge; a virtue I still appreciate today. The “power of radio” I thought. How radio waves were able to transcend 60 miles through the heat of summer and the frigid winters of the prairie is beyond me.
That radio is where I discovered and listened to my first public speaker, Earl Nightingale. His syndicated series, “Our Changing World” would play about 10 minutes, while I was having breakfast at 7:45 am every morning, before walking 4 blocks to school.
Fast forward several decades
I am invited to a Toastmasters meeting. I instantly discover this higher plateau, a higher calling towards writing and speaking. After many years of membership, I started looking for a project to do, as members are required to complete a High Performance Leadership (HPL) project towards their Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM) designation. The “Power of Radio” was still with me; morphing itself into a higher offering. It was also the decade of the booming internet, blogs and PODCASTS.
With the coming together of these 3, TDKtalks was born. It was the natural evolution of opportunity, possibility and offering for me.
Our simple radio of the 1960’s manifest itself into a “virtual radio” of the internet offering several magnitudes of capability and empowerment; not just to listen, but to envision, write, choreograph, create and finally publish audio and video episodes.
I don’t spend as much time at my website as I would like, as I work full-time as an engineering technologist, just stopping short of being a genuine “geek”. But this full-time job does fuel some of what I contemplate, write, speak, present and produce videos about.
My blog posts are deliberately kept short, just delivering the main points. Their full-length versions can be read on Ezinearticles Page
Thanks for visiting. Check out my episodes. I hope you find them helpful.
